Description
The MMTB X Class Birney trams were among the most unique vehicles to operate on the Melbourne tramway system. Imported from the United States in 1923, only two examples entered service with the Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board, numbered 217 and 218. The cars were designed by Charles O. Birney and Joseph M. Bosenbury and formed part of the famous “Birney Safety Car” family, thousands of which operated throughout North America and around the world. These two trams were the final tramcars imported from the United States for operation in Melbourne.
Designed as lightweight, economical tramcars for routes with lower passenger numbers, the Birneys incorporated a number of advanced safety features for their time, including interlocked controls that prevented movement while doors were open. They were also the first Melbourne trams fitted with air-operated doors.
The X Class trams spent much of their working lives on the Hawthorn and Point Ormond routes, while also appearing across the Melbourne system on all-night services. Their distinctive American appearance, compact dimensions and historic significance make them one of the most fascinating tram types to have operated in Melbourne.
